RRB History – Long back in 1942, with the purpose to recruit the Subordinate Staff on North West Railway at that time, a Service Commission was set up as a trial measure. The commission had two members and a Chairman. In 1945, after the reconsideration of positions, few Service Commissions were launched under the Railway Board at Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Lucknow. The Service Commissions were launched to perform the dual functions:
- To recruit class III staff
- To tender advice to General Managers to deal with appeal from subordinate staff on disciplinary matters.
In the later years, the working of the commissions was reviewed and a lot of development took place. More and more Service Commission was set up across India with the purpose of recruitment in the Indian Railways.
Later, all the Service Commissions were renamed as Railway Recruitment Boards.

RRCB also issues instructions and Guidelines to the RRB’s. It also handles redressal of grievances of the candidates in the recruitment related matters.
- The prime objective was to lessen the work load on the prevailing RRB’s
